Morrisville Land Use Plan 2021

Public Parks & Open Space

Implementing the Parks and Recreation Master Plan would result in the provision of 9.6 acres of parkland per 1,000 people overall. The Town should take a proactive approach to identify future sites for parks and facilities based on the policies and stan- dards of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. This should include revisiting and updating park needs as development occurs and coordinating with property owners to address access to parks and open spaces as part of future development. Key Considerations ⊲ Utilize the Parks and Recreation Master Plan as a primary resource to guide the development of future parks and facilities and align future development with parks and recreation needs. ⊲ Take a proactive approach to identifying and acquiring future sites for parks and facilities, guided by the Parks and Recre- ation Master Plan. ⊲ In accordance with the Parks and Recre- ation Master Plan, target 135 acres of new parkland by 2028 or the standard of 9.6 acres per 1,000 residents overall. ⊲ Require considerations for access to public parks and open space as part of future development proposals and public projects.

Public parks and open space provide both active and passive recreation opportunities that are accessible to all residents. These contribute significantly to quality of life, community character, and sense of place in Morrisville. Maintaining, expanding, and enhancing these facilities will be a crit- ical part of land use and development in Morrisville, both contributing to the Town’s desirability and image as well as providing residents with access to the environment. As Morrisville continues to grow, it is essen- tial that the Town regularly analyze and address park and recreation needs. This should be guided by the Parks and Recreation Master Plan and account for ongoing and anticipated growth and development in the community. The Parks and Recreation Master Plan calls for 135 acres of new park land by 2028. This is particularly important given the speed and intensity of development and decreasing amount of available land.
