Tree Canopy Morrisville’s tree canopy is a valued asset that contributes to the community’s desir- ability and should be carefully preserved. Tree protection is regulated by Section 5.4 of the Morrisville Unified Development Ordinance, which prohibits clear-cutting and establishes standards for the percentage of existing tree canopy that must be retained on a property (State laws prohibit the Town from stopping clear cutting if it’s for single-family detached development). The Town should continue to strictly apply local regulations for tree protection as new development is proposed. Consideration should be given not just to the number of trees protected, but also their location, visibility, and integration as part of site design. Ultimately, stands of trees should contribute to the character of a development and the surrounding area. The Town should also explore incentives to encourage developers to preserve trees on their property in addition to those required. This could include allowing increased density and setback reductions if additional trees are maintained or newly planted.

Key Considerations ⊲ Continue to strictly apply local regulations for tree protection as part of new develop- ment, with considerations for the number, location, visibility, and integration of trees as part of site design. ⊲ Review and update tree regulations to consider additional protections or consid- erations that should be incorporated as part of site design and review, such as wild- life habitats and corridors and maintaining stands of trees across property lines. ⊲ Explore incentives to encourage devel- opers to preserve trees on their property above those required by the Town’s UDO. ⊲ Consider programs to replace trees that are removed elsewhere on a site or within the community and seek long-term growth of the tree canopy.
