Article 11: Interpretation and Definitions Section 11.5. Terms and Uses Defined 11.4.3. Illuminated Signs

D WELLING Any building, structure, manufactured home or mobile home, or part thereof, used and occupied for human habitation or intended to be so used, and includes any outhouses and appurtenances belonging thereto or usually enjoyed therewith, except that for purposes of Article 12 of N.C. G.S. 160D it does not include any manufactured home, mobile home, or recreational vehicle, if used solely for a seasonal vacation purpose. D WELLING U NIT A single unit providing complete, independent living facilities for one or more persons, including permanent provisions for living, sleeping, eating, cooking and sanitation. D WELLING , D UPLEX A single detached dwelling on a lot that contains two dwelling units. The units may be located side by side in a horizontal configuration or stacked one above the other in a vertical configuration, sharing common vertical walls or horizontal floors and ceilings. D WELLING , L IVE /W ORK A structure or portion of a structure combining a residential dwelling unit for one or more persons with an integrated work space principally used by one or more of the dwelling unit residents. D WELLING , M ANUFACTURED H OME A factory-built structure, transportable in one or more sections, that is built on a permanent chassis and designed to be used as a dwelling with or without a permanent foundation when connected to the required utilities, and includes the plumbing, heating, air conditioning and electrical systems contained therein. This includes any structure with respect to which the manufacturer voluntarily files a certification required by the Secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and complies with the standards established under the National Manufactured Housing Construction and Safety Standards Act of 1974 (42 U.S.C. § 5401 et seq.), as amended. This does not include travel trailers or recreation vehicles. D WELLING , M ULTIFAMILY A building or group of buildings containing three or more dwelling units that are typically located on one lot. The dwelling units may be located side by side in a horizontal configuration or stacked one above the other in a vertical configuration, sharing common vertical walls or horizontal floors and ceilings. Each dwelling unit shall include permanent provisions for living, sleeping, cooking, and sanitation, and can be owner or tenant occupied. Multifamily dwellings also include carriage – style buildings with multifamily dwelling units over garages. D WELLING , S INGLE -F AMILY A TTACHED A building containing two or more dwelling units that are attached horizontally through common walls. Each dwelling unit occupies space from the ground to the roof of the building, and is located on a separate lot. D WELLING , S INGLE -F AMILY D ETACHED A single detached dwelling on a lot, other than a manufactured home dwelling, that contains a single dwelling unit (excluding any accessory apartment). E ASEMENT An interest in land granted by the owner to another party that entitles its holder to a specific use, including a grant by the property owner for use by the public, a utility company, or person(s) of land for specified purposes.
