Morrisville Active Kids Strategic Plan
Active Kids Strategic Plan
Greenways/Trails & Nature Play
Strategy: Continue investment in linking greenways to parks and recre- ation facilities and other hubs of physical activity.
The Town of Morrisville has well-received greenways throughout the community. Greenways that connect to uses, especially parks and recreation facilities, increase opportunities for physical activity beyond walking/biking the greenways.
Action Steps for Implementation
Task 1 Incorporate greenways in the Town’s comprehensive plans, including the transportation plan. While this may be in place in some plans, it is important to ensure it remains a presence as its benefits go beyond recreation. Task 2 Dedicate a portion of existing parks and recreation funding to the development and maintenance of greenways. Funds are needed to support walkable and bikeable infrastructure. These funds can be incorporated into the existing parks and recreation and planning budgets. However, dedicating funds toward active transportation and active recreation demonstrates its priority. Network partners can explore funding strategies to support active recreation.
Task 3
Promote greenways for residents and visitors. A mobile phone app can display maps and current locations. Events and activities on greenways bring residents and visitors to the greenway and promote usage. Task 4 Work with Morrisville Police Department to ensure and promote safety of greenways to residents and encourage more use. This effort can also help in cases of new greenways/paths going in next to existing development, with residents expressing concerns related to crime. Task 5 Develop greenway-specific detailed engineering drawings for greenway/street intersections, perhaps in partnership with other cities, CAMPO or NCDOT. This will help develop safer crossing treatments and feed into roadways built by developers and NCDOT to ensure incorporation of greenway design features at trail crossings.
